Bicyclist Injured on 16th Street Mall – Colorado Bicycle Accident Attorney

A 72-year-old bicyclist was injured Sunday night when he was hit by an RTD shuttle bus on the 16th Street Mall. The Denver Post is reporting that the man was riding a bicycle north on the Mall at about 9:40 p.m. between Lawrence and Larimer streets. The bicyclist had pulled into the center portion of the mall to get out of the way of a passing shuttle. As the shuttle passed the bicyclist hit his brakes and went over the handlebars, landing in the path of the shuttle bus.  The man’s leg was run over by the back wheel of the shuttle.

As fuel costs rise, more and more people are turning to alternative modes of transportation including bicycles. However, with traffic counts mounting, our roads are becoming more congested resulting in more auto-bicycle accidents and fatalities. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 716 cyclists were killed and 52,000 injured in traffic crashes in 2008.

The last thing you expect to happen to you when riding your bicycle is to be hit by a vehicle. Unfortunately accidents do occur and knowing who to call after an accident is important.
